What is root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment is done to remove infected pulp inside a decayed or broken tooth. It may be completed in a single sitting or multiple sittings depending on the case.
When is it required?
- Grossly decayed tooth
- Broken tooth involving pulp
- Tooth discoloration due to trauma
Is it painful?
No. The procedure is completely painless and performed under local anesthesia.
Orthodontic Treatment
Orthodontics is a specialized branch of dentistry focused on diagnosing, preventing, and treating misaligned teeth, jaw irregularities, and improper bites (malocclusions).
Is there any best age for orthodontic treatment?
According to the American Association of Orthodontists, children should have their first orthodontic visit no later than the age of 7. While many children won’t need treatment at this age, it’s a good time to find out if there are any issues to watch out for. Often, children who need early orthodontic treatment can reduce their need for extensive dental procedures in the future.
Is there any age limit for orthodontic treatment?
Orthodontic treatment can be done at any age.
Benefits from orthodontic treatment
Orthodontic treatment can benefit people of all ages, though some may need it more than others. Many individuals choose orthodontics to improve the alignment of their teeth and achieve a more confident smile. But in addition to cosmetic benefits, orthodontics offers improved chewing function and better oral health.
Malaligned teeth can lead to cavities, plaque accumulation, gum disease and often early tooth loss. Moreover, it can lead to incorrect bite decreasing chewing efficiency and digestive problems. Improper upper and lower jaw alignment can lead to TMJ (temporo-mandibular joint) disorders, sleep apnea and shoulder and back pain.
Types of orthodontic treatment
- Metal braces: When you think of braces, traditional metal braces might be what you imagine. Metal braces use stainless steel bands, brackets and wires to gently shift your teeth over time.
- Ceramic braces: sometimes called clear braces — work the same way as metal braces. The key difference is that the brackets, wires and ligatures are tooth-colored, so they blend in with your smile. Ceramic braces are still visible, but they’re less noticeable.
- Invisible (Lingual) braces: Lingual braces are similar to traditional braces. But they go on the back surfaces of your teeth instead of the front.
Rather than using brackets and wires to straighten your teeth, these systems use a series of computer crafted, custom-made, clear (transparent) aligner trays. You wear each set of trays for one to two weeks before switching them out for the next set in the series. Over time, the clear aligners shift your teeth into their proper positions.
If you wear braces or clear aligners, you’ll need a retainer once your orthodontic treatment ends. A retainer is a custom oral appliance that keeps your teeth from drifting out of their proper positions. Your orthodontist can tell you how often you’ll need to wear your retainer to maintain the results of treatment.
How long results last after orthodontic treatment?
If retainer is worn as directed, results should last the rest of life. However, If the retainer is not worn regularly, the teeth may gradually drift back into their original positions over time.
